Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. And at AltPharm, it seems no one is more inventive than dispensary consultant Alleyah Miner. When she was experiencing some menstrual discomfort recently she came up with a customized solution to her need in the form of what she calls the Period Package.
Many women suffer from menstrual-related cramping, lower back pain, bloating, sore breasts, nausea, vomiting, irritability, headache and fatigue. Common treatments for some of the discomfort can take the form of NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen, or hormonal treatments such as birth control pills. Medications like these, however, come with their own risks and side effects.
As one of AltPharms resident experts and a registered medical cannabis patient, Alleyah has treated some of her menstrual symptoms with flower for several months. “It worked great, while the effects last,” said Alleyah, “but cramps and things usually go on way longer than smoked cannabis works.”
This month Alleyah decided to try a topical balm with a one-to-one ratio of THC and CBD to address her abdominal and back cramps directly.
“The Avexia Balm was amazing,” said Alleyah, “I rubbed a little on my abdomen and the cramps just melted away. I always knew it was good for muscle pain and cramps, and the uterus is really just a muscle, so it made sense to try. It was amazing, and it worked for about twenty-four hours.”
Alleyah still uses flower, and adds a one-to-one edible like microdose tablets or troches for long-term relief in her personally-tested Period Pack.
“I used to use like three or more Advil Liqui-Gels at a time, but that’s hard on your stomach, and only helps some symptoms,” said Alleyah. “The combination of what I call the Period Pack means I don’t suffer. I feel like a normal human again.”
Alleyah opts for Sativa/Indica hybrid prerolls for her flower, but suggests people who have more severe mood issues consider a Sativa preroll instead.
